3:10pm est: Cardinals/Rockies Over 13 (4 Units)
Right back to Coors field today. Temps are heating up and that ball is flying in the thin Denver Air. Today’s weather conditions are even more favorable than yesterday. Not only is it 80+ but there’s 15 mph winds blowing out to right field. These two combined for 15 runs last night and 11 the night before that.
STL SP Jack Flaherty’s ERA looks good at 1.8 but he’s escaped damage. He has an xERA of 5.25 and much of that has to do with the 14 free passes he’s given up in just 10 IP. He hit 1 batter and walked 13. That’s going to catch up to him and there’s no better spot for it than Coors Field. Flaherty owns a career 3.95 road era as it is, and he’s never pitched at Coors Field before. It’s certainly a learning curve. Routine fly balls leave the park and pitches just don’t have the same break on warm days as they do in every other ballpark. With those command issues he’s failed to go deeper than 5 innings and the Cardinals just used their best bullpen arms to lock down last night’s win.
We covered how poorly Jose Urena has been pitching when we hit the Over on April 7th. CLICK HERE. Bottom line, he’s just bad and that’s bad on steroids when he’s pitching at Coors field. The Cardinals have one of the deepest line-ups in the league. They have 7 guys hitting over .300 on the young season. The Rockies blew it yesterday, using up two of their more reliable bullpen arms and squandering a lead. One error led to 3 unearned runs. Colorado ranks 23rd in errors per game in 2023 and ranked 26th in 2022. If Urena gets pulled early again the Rockies are rolling out well below average relief.
