The Mets and Yankees meet for the 2nd and final game of this subway series in the Bronx tonight. The Yankees handed Max Scherzer a Loss as Yankees starter Domingo German picked up the Win in a 4-2 victory. Taijuan Walker will start for the Mets and the newly acquired Frankie Montas starts for the Yankees.
Taijuan Walker: Walker’s had an interesting month of August. First, he was shelled for 8 earned runs on August 5th in just 1 inning of work. He followed that up with a quality start, 2 ER in 6IP against the Reds on August 10th. But then on August 16th after allowing 3 baserunners across 2 innings against Atlanta he was taken out with back spasms. Going back to July he did put together a quality start against these Yankees. He gave up 3 runs, 2 HR’s, 7 hits, and 2 free passes. He limited the damage by allowing solo homeruns.
Frankie Montas: Montas was acquired by NY from the Oakland A’s at the trade deadline and has been incredibly disappointing. After pitching to a 3.18 ERA in 19 Oakland starts, he’s surrendered 14 ER in just 14 innings of work across 3 starts in NY. To rub salt in the wound it was this move that gave them the flexibility to trade Left Hander Jordan Montgomery in exchange for Harrison Bader. Montgomery meanwhile just completed a 1 hit complete game and has allowed just 1ER across 4 starts in St Louis. Bader however is still on the IL.
I do like both team’s offensive performances lately. The Mets have scored 7 or more in 4 of their L7 games while the Yankees have found a way to score on both Alek Manoah and Max Scherzer, two of the league’s premier pitchers. The Yankees did just go through a major offensive slump but began showing signs of a breakout last week. Trade acquisition Andrew Benintendi has got things going, DJ Lemahieu healed up from a foot injury, Gleybar Torres has hit a pair of homeruns in his L5 games and Aaron Judge is still Aaron Judge.
Also have some trends behind this, the Over is 8-3-1 in the L12 meetings between these two and more specifically 15-5-1 their L21 in the Bronx. Following a Yankees win the Over is 12-4. And the Over is 15-5-2 in the Mets last 22 interleague road games. The Mets should have no problem getting to Montas and I don’t expect the best version of Walker with the Month he’s had, injury he dealt with, and the week between his last start.
