Austin Gomber was the big return piece when COL sent Arenado to STL back in 2021. While he's largely underwhelmed, he's flashed quality streaks before and he's riding one now. He's allowed 2 ER or less in 6 of his last 7 starts. 5 of those 7 starts at Coors Field too. He's allowed just 2 ER in his last two road starts combined (12IP). He has a 4.05 Road ERA (9 Starts) which is significantly better than his 6.82 ERA at Coors. This Cardinals offense isn't blowing anyone away lately either. They've scored 3 runs or less in 6 of their last 9 and 4 runs in another.
A very bad Cardinals bullpen is going to have to piece this one together. Zack Thompson makes his 2nd career MLB start today. He gave up 5 Runs on 5 innings in his only other start back in 2022. The Cards won't ask him to pitch more than a couple innings today though. He pitched a few days ago and hasn't thrown more than 2 innings in relief this season. Thompson has a 4.76 ERA through 16 appearances in the MLB this year. He had an 8.65 ERA at AAA this season and a 4.73 ERA at AAA last season.
Those coming in after Thompson don't have much better numbers either. The STL bullpen ranks 23rd in ERA and they just finished shipping off 3 of their best relievers at the deadline. Offensively the Rockies shipped off some talent at the deadline themselves but they're still scoring runs. They've scored 4,5, and 9 runs in 3 of their last 5. They also scored 3 runs in the other 2 games combined but that will be the Rockies new norm with the youth lineup. When they run into good pitching, they're going to struggle. However they can hit mediocre pitching and their 3 most important bats are all red hot the past week.
