12:20pm est: Angels ML +140 (4 Units)
Lucas Giolito makes his 2nd start as an Angel. He was okay in his first, 3 ER on 5 and a third. Got nabbed for a pair of long balls. He faces a Braves offense that's had some ups and downs since the Break. They lit up the Brewers last weekend but outside of that it's been a modest performance from the #1 ranked offense in OPS. They've only scored more than 4 Runs in 4 of their previous 9 games. 3 of which came in a series sweep over MIL. They scored 1 run against the Angels in Game 1 of this series and 5 last night.
The Angels were able to rest their best bullpen arms yesterday. Losing to Spencer Strider the Halo's rolled out the bottom half of the pen and ATL took advantage. Their closer who's a perfect 23/23 in Save situations is ready and rested. The newly acquire Reynaldo Lopez is good to throw an inning. Dominic Leone who they just traded for from the Mets will be here come game time. He has a sub 2.0 ERA in his last appearances. Then there's also Matt Moore with a 1.93 ERA and Jamie Barria with a 2.88.
The Angels loaded up at the deadline and made a couple big acquisitions to the bullpen. With Ohtani taking the mound tomorrow and most of these guys on multiple days rest, expect the Angels to go to the Pen early if there's any trouble with Giolito.
Yonny Chirino's starts for the Braves and he simply isn't good. He has a 6.93 ERA as a starter in 2023. The Braves claimed him off Waivers and in his first start for ATL he gave up 4 ER in 3.2 IP to the Brewers. This will be his 2nd start for ATL. He faces a revamped Angels lineup.
The additions of CJ Cron and Randal Grichuk from COL provide much needed offensive production. Zack Neto is also back in the lineup after missing some time with injuries. The Angels have been getting on base but can't seem to break through. Believe that changes today. Going back to their last series vs TOR, the Angels are 3 for 44 with RISP and have left 52 guys on base. That's across 3 games against the Blue Jays and 2 against the Braves. Despite that they're 2-3 in those games.
Angels Manager Phil Nevin penciled in CJ Cron and Randal Grichuk back to back behind Ohtani. He had Grichuk deeper in the lineup for first couple games but he's red hot at the plate. This also provides Ohtani with some protection so teams can't keep intentionally walking him. Renfroe's also behind those two with a 1.193 OPS over his past 7 games. The Halo's also called up Jordyn Adams. The young right hander has been tearing it up in AAA with a .338 BA and .962 OPS through July. See it all the time with young guys starting off hot as soon as they're called up. Takes a moment for MLB pitchers to figure them out.
Combination of a better lineup and inferior pitching should help the Halo's bust through their RISP slump. The Law of averages comes into play eventually. The ball will find holes in the defense eventually.
