Chris Sale is making his 2nd start since a June injury sent him to the IL. He had a solid first outing, allowing 2 ER over 4.2 IP. He was at home and facing the 29th ranked offense in baseball though. He hasn't been nearly as sharp outside of Fenway as he's been inside it as of late. Dating back to 2019 he has a 4.31 Road ERA. The Oft injured Sale's made 23 road starts during that span. He currently has a 5.34 Road ERA in 6 starts this season.
The Southpaw also faces a good LHP hitting lineup today. The Nationals rank 4th in BA at .277 and 8th in OPS at .773 against LHP. Trading Jeimer Candelario hasn't cost them 1 bit vs LHP either. He hit .227 with a .702 OPS vs LHP as a National. Going back the Nationals hit .258 with an OPS of .775 (10th) in their last 15 games. They're currently red hot hitting .294 with an 854 OPS (5th) the past week.
Sale's health is always a factor. He threw just 93 pitches in two rehab starts before his start against the Tigers. He has a history of struggling in the few starts following a return from injury too. He and just about everyone else. BOS will remain cautious with Sale. He was pulled after 58 pitches against the Tigers and likely won't go too much further past that. Washington will get chances against an average bullpen.
Patrick Corbin is coming off a pair of nice starts. He has a 2.38 ERA in August and has surrendered just 5 hits across 11.1 IP. He's also pitched much better at home since joining Washington and even in recent years where he's struggled. He faces a Boston offense's whos OPS drops .023 points against LHP compared to RHP. It's a Boston offense that ranks 19th in OPS the past week and 22nd in OPS the Month of August. They also have the 22nd ranked Road Offense with an OPS of .693.
