SEA SP Emerson Hancock is making the 2nd big league start of his career. He pitched at home against San Diego last week and held them to 1 run o 5 IP. He allowed a pair of hits, walked 3, and struck out 3. A solid debut but he's not an MLB pitcher just yet. For starters he hasn't pitched a single game at Triple-A. He spent all of 2022 and all of this season at Double-A. He currently has a 4.32 ERA through 20 starts at AA this season. He's also really struggled on the road, posting a 5.85 Road ERA in 8 starts in 2022 and a 6.38 ERA through 10 starts in 2023. This will be his first MLB road start. He did surrender 3ER over 5 innings in his final AA start before the call up too.
Then there's the hot Royals offense. They're one of the best lineups in baseball over the past Month. They rank 6th with a .789 OPS over the last 30 days and 2nd with an .870 OPS over the last week. 6 of the 9 Royals batters in today's lineup have an OPS above .900 over the last week. The Royals OPS is nearly .060 points higher when at Home compared to playing on the road too.
Jordan Lyles gets the nod for KC. He's put together some respectable starts of late. He allowed 4ER over 8 innings in Boston his last time out but deserved better. A 2 out "Double" off the glove of AJ Melendez drove in 2 runs and the following batter proceeded to drive in 1 more. Melendez fielding % in LF is .960, the MLB average is .987. Lyles allowed 7 hits that game and walked just 1 batter over the 8 innings. He also finished July with a 3.86 ERA and has allowed just 3ER in his last 2 Home starts combined.
Offensively the Mariners haven't been great. They've scored 3 or less in 5 of their last 8 games and are averaging 4 runs per game over that stretch. That would rank 27th on the season. They've also hit just .232 with a .676 OPS over the last week.
