Louie Varland has pitched well all season. He's allowed more than 3 runs in just 1 of his 7 starts. He's also allowed just 9 Runs combined in his last 5 starts. Last time out he shut down the Houston Astros offense who are/were absolutely rolling. He allowed just 4 hits over 7 innings without allowing a run. Offensively the Rays have been struggling. They're hitting just .230 with a .656 over the past week. They also just placed Brandon Lowe on the IL, a valuable middle infielder and quality left handed bat.
The Twins 6th ranked bullpen is also freshly rested from yesterday's day off. Every single reliever is available. Their star closer Jhoan Duran hasn't allowed an Earned Run in 10 straight appearances and has thrown 1+ innings in 5 of them.
Zack Eflin starts for TB and he's over achieved in 2023. His 3.3 season ERA would be his best mark if the season ended today. This is his 8th season, the best he's done is a 3.97 during Covid's shortened season. He's starting to show kinks, allowed 3ER or more in 4 of his last 5 starts. There's also a terrible Rays bullpen backing him up. The Twins are at a huge advantage as soon as the starters come out.
6:05pm est: AZ/WSH Over 10 (3 Units)
Tommy Henry just turned in a gem at home against the Rockies but Colorado just can't bring their offense on the road (29th ranked road offense). This will be his 2nd start against Washington this year. He was at home in his first, allowing 2 ER in 6 IP on 6 hits and 2 walks on May 6th. That extra familiarity will help WSH. Henry has struggled away from Chase Field, posting a 5.74 road ERA and even the Oakland A's (Dead Last Offense) tagged him for 4 ER at their place. He's allowed 2 homeruns in each of his last 2 road starts.
The Nationals also excel vs Left Handed Pitching. Their .292 batting average ranks 5th in baseball and their .783 OPS ranks 8th. They're also playing well, hitting .290 with an .849 OPS over the last week.
Jake Irvin starts for WSH and contrary to Henry's splits, he's struggled at home. He has a 7.47 Home ERA through 4 starts. Outside of his first 2 starts, it's been ugly for the Rookie. He has a 9.39 ERA over his last 4 starts and hasn't pitched past the 5th inning.
That brings us to the bullpens. Both teams rank in the bottom 3rd of bullpen ERA and are complete liabilities outside of a few arms.
