Miles Mikolas has been stellar for STL. He didn’t allow more than 3 ER in any May start and finished the Month with a 1.89 ERA. He hasn’t allowed a run-in back-to-back starts and combined to pitch 15 Innings in those 2. Last year he held the Pirates to a .237 BA and .671 OPS across 4 starts. He faced them April 16th when he was struggling, and the Pirates were rolling offensively, and he still held them to 2 ER over 5.2 Innings. Mikolas has allowed just 2 ER in his last 4 road starts combined (23.2 IP).
Rich Hill starts for PIT and he’s been blasted in back to back starts. He allowed 5 ER vs TEX then 6 ER @ SF. He’s also pitched to a 5.83 ERA in 6 home starts. Took the Cardinals offense a little while but they’re back to punishing Left-Handed pitching. They rank 9th with a .782 OPS vs LHP this year but that will continue to climb as the season continues.
Rich Hill also averages less than 5 Innings Pitched per start at home. Despite a stacked bullpen, length will be an issue. That bullpen used up from the first two games of this series. They’ve been tasked with recording 17 outs in the past two days. They went to the bullpen after yesterday’s rain delay. Most importantly, David Bednar is out of commission. The Pirates star closer has been tasked with pitching back-to-back days.
