The Rays SP Tyler Glasnow has allowed both 3 Hits and 1 ER or less in 4 of his previous 5 starts. He has a 2.25 ERA over his last 5 starts and it's that "high" because of a bizarre start against the Angels that saw him allow 5 ER. It was truly tough luck baseball. 3 of his Earned Runs got on base through infield singles on weak contact. Another came from a 70mph exit velo bloop fly ball that dropped in front of the center fielder. Then there was the 1 hard contact solo homer. A passed ball also moved the last 2 earned runs into scoring position. Just a whacky start for Glasnow. CLE also has very little experience against the Rays Ace.
CLE starts Cal Quantril. He makes a much anticipated return to the CLE rotation following his 2nd IL stint this season. He originally hit the IL following a May 30th start and came back June 30th. Just to make 2 starts before going back on the IL with shoulder inflammation on July 6th. They played it safe this time. Giving him 4 rehab starts dating back to to August 9th. He threw 89 pitches in his most recent start in which he pitched 7.1 Innings allowing 5 hits, 2 walks, and just 2 ER. He also threw 84 pitches in the start prior so his arm is stretched out for it.
Battling injuries it's been a tough season for Cal but he's very good since he joined Cleveland in 2020. He posted a 2.25 ERA in limited work in 2020, a 2.89 ERA in 40 appearances and 22 starts in 2021, then a 3.38 ERA as a full time starter in 2022. He still has the same Movement and Velo on his pitches compared to previous seasons. He was also pitching well leading up to his first IL stint and he was sharp in his final rehab start.
He's also pitching at home at Progressive Field. Where prior to this season he had a 2.88 ERA in 44 appearances and 34 starts. He had a 3.28 ERA at home in 2022 and never allowed more than 4 ER. He's also backed by one of the best bullpens in baseball. The Guardians 3.48 ERA ranks 5th in the Majors and they just got even better after adding Matt Moore and Reynaldo Lopez off waivers from the Angels. They also nabbed SP Lucas Giolito as they try and push for the division trailing the Twins by 5 games.
The Rays bullpen ranks 14th with a 3.94 ERA on the season but it's vastly improved as the season's gone along. Everyone in the Rays bullpen has a sub 3.0 ERA except for Erasmo Ramirez and he's made just 6 appearances for the Rays. Both bullpens are rested after each team got the day off yesterday.
