Iowa walks into Seattle in about as tough a spot as a ranked team can draw. The Hawkeyes are coming off back-to-back heavyweight fights with Michigan and Ohio State, and the underlying numbers were worse than the results. Iowa needed a touchdown on the final play to beat Michigan 20-19, then fell 31-14 to the Buckeyes. Across those two games, the Hawkeyes lost the first-down battle by 15 and were outgained 6.4 to 4.7 in yards per play. Now they have to turn around on a short week and fly across the country for a Friday night road game.
The quarterback situation only makes things harder. Starter Hank Brown sprained the AC joint in his throwing shoulder against Ohio State and never returned, and Kirk Ferentz said this week that Iowa can't count on him, describing him as "really limited in what he can do right now." With a bye week up next, Iowa has every reason to give Brown extra time to heal. That would hand the start to Jeremy Hecklinski, who has completed just 56.3% of his passes for 208 yards this season.
Whoever lines up under center draws a tough assignment against this Washington defense, especially with an Iowa offense that wants to win on the ground. The Huskies are allowing just 3.2 yards per carry and 111.4 rushing yards per game, and no opponent has averaged more than 3.8 yards per carry against them this season. Their secondary is getting healthier at the right time as well. Nickelback Rahshawn Clark and cornerback Emmanuel Karnley are back from injury, and this group just held No. 18 USC to 245 passing yards and one touchdown through the air.
Washington's record also doesn't tell the full story. Its two Big Ten losses came by a combined seven points: 27-24 to Minnesota and 25-21 on the road at USC, where the Huskies drove 77 yards in the closing minutes before coming up just short. The market has taken notice, moving toward Washington all week and pushing the line from -1.5 to -3 at several books.
Bottom Line: Iowa is battered, short on rest, and likely without its starting quarterback, while Washington's run defense takes away exactly what the Hawkeyes want to do. Lean Washington -2.5.
