8/25/22

Moneyline: 49ers -160 / Texans +135

Spread: 49ers -3 / Texans +3

Total: Over / Under 40.5

The San Francisco 49ers (2-0) and Houston Texans (2-0) square off on Thursday night to wrap up their NFL pre-season. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:15 p.m. eastern time at NRG Stadium in Houston.

49ers

The visiting San Francisco 49ers will roll out the starters in their final dress rehearsal. Kyle Shanahan has come out and said the longest they would play would be the first half. Some of their more Veteran guys may get pulled a little earlier then the rest of the starters. None of the 49ers starters played in their win over the Minnesota Vikings last week. However, Trey Lance and the 1’s did get a couple drives in their pre-season opener against Green Bay which resulted in 10 points. Lance connected with Danny Gray down the sideline for a 76-yard touchdown score on his final drive. With Lance taking over for Jimmy Garoppolo every extra rep he can get will come in handy before the season.

Texans

Houston Head Coach Lovie Smith will be playing his starters through the first half. Starting QB Davis Mills saw action in both of the Texans first two pre-season games. Week 1 saw him lead consecutive 3 and outs before being pulled but as he will tonight, he played the entire first half in week two. He went 10/17 for 96 yards and a touchdown. That was the only first half score for the Texans. The most intriguing story out of Houston's camp is rookie running back Dameon Pierce out of Florida. The buzz is that he's earned the starting job and in an offense lacking playmakers he’s the guy everyone wants to see in this one.

The Pick

When everyone hears that starters are playing in a pre-season game everyone thinks Over, but I actually love the Under in this game tonight. Sure Trey Lance looked good in his pre-season opener against the Packers back-up defense but he doesn’t have much game experience against a true starting defense. This Texan’s defensive front has also been a problem for opposing teams, racking up 11 sacks and 16 total pressures in their first 2 pre-season games. On the opposite side Davis Mills and the Texans starters haven’t been able to find success against anybody really, be it starters or backups. And now he goes up against a San Francisco starting defense that was 2nd in points allowed per game last season. Then once the starters come out there’s nothing but 3rd/4th string fringe players coming in. Not many playmakers. This is the final dress rehearsal before these teams cut their rosters from 80 down to 53. The 49ers bottom half of the roster has dominated on defense, allowing a combined 8, 2nd half points through the first two pre-season games. And it’s the same story in Houston, their defense has given up just 10, 2nd half points in their first two-preseason games.

Bonnetti's Pick: San Francisco 49ers vs Houston Texans Under 40.5.
