These National League West Rivals open the season up in Arizona at Chase Field. 35 year old Yu Darvish takes the mound for San Diego while the 32 year old Madison Bumgarner (MadBum) gets the nod for Arizona. MadBum is scheduled to throw the first pitch at 9:40PM est.
The San Diego Padres are looking to make the leap to contender this year. After a disappointing 79-83 season last year the Padres made some serious moves this off-season. They acquired lefty Ace Sean Manea from the A’s, 2020 HR leader Luke Voit from the Yankees, and World Series winner Will Beaty from the Dodgers to bolster an already deep roster. Mike Clevinger also returns to the Padres this year and if he’s the Ace of old SD may just have the best rotation in all of Baseball.
Yu Darvish makes his 2nd straight opening day start for the Padres and 3rd of his career. He hasn’t been great in his previous two outings. In a combined 10 innings pitched he’s allowed 8 ER, 12 hits, and walked 6. He has a history of struggling in his first start on the year, across his L5 seasons he’s pitched just 22 innings while allowing 19 runs. In his only two starts at Chase field last year he went just 2.2 innings in both starts while the Diamondbacks drilled him for 11 total run.
The Arizona Diamondbacks had a year to forget in 2021, they won just 52 games and lost 110. They still managed to go 32-49 at home though. Health had a lot to do with their struggles last year. Their starting rotation was decimated, at one point 4 of their 5 SP were on the IL at the same time. The Diamondbacks still have some big-time hitters and free agent acquisitions Mark Melancon and Ian Kennedy help sure up a bullpen that was below average last year.
Madison Bumgarner has been penciled in as Opening Day starter for the 8th time and 3rd straight for AZ. This will actually be his 4th straight opening day start against SD too. His first two went well, 5 ER in 12.2 IP but last year’s start he allowed 6 ER in just 4 IP. He dominated SD in his two other starts against them in 2021 though. He allowed just 2 ER in 7 IP in San Diego and again just 2 ER in 6.2 IP at home.
Through Spring Training Darvish as been decent but the Padres line-up has performed poorly. San Diego’s “A Line-up” has a combined .230 average and .725 OPS through the spring. MadBum’s final dress rehearsal was a huge success, allowing just 1 hit in 5 innings of no run ball. The Diamondbacks starters have hit well too, combining for a .299 average and .937 OPS through spring.
