The Phillies and Rockies open up a 3-game set at Coors field tonight. Philadelphia just lost 3 out of 4 in Miami and the Rockies split a 4-game series at home vs the Cubs. The Phillies are off to a disappointing start. They’re just 4-6 and although they made moves to sure up their bullpen they still rank 23rd in that category. Rockies are the surprise team so far with a 6-3 record, something nobody predicted.
“Ace” Aaron Nola starts for Philly. But he simply isn’t an Ace and hasn’t been since the 2020 season. Through 2 starts in 2022 he owns a 6.75 era in just 9.1 IP. He’s had his struggles on the road, last year he had a 5.27 road era, in 2020 a 4.26, and in 2019 a 5.19. 2020 and 2019 were some of Nola’s better years too. He also has a HR problem, he let up 6 in spring (14.1 IP), and 3 in his 2 starts this year. Coors field where the ball carries like no other spells trouble for Nola.
Chad Kuhl starts for the Rockies. Despite a brutal spring he came out and pitched well in his first Rockies start. He allowed just 1 ER through 4.1 IP against the Rangers. He did walk 4 batters and that’s been the theme for Kuhl throughout his career. Last year he allowed 51 free passes in just 80.1 IP. He also walked 4 in 5.1 IP in spring. The Rangers poor line-up couldn’t take advantage, but this loaded Phillies line-up will.
The Rockies are grooving offensively, they currently rank 2nd in both BA and OPS. They will have no problem getting to Nola or any Phillies reliver. The Phillies loaded line-up will also punish Kuhl for his poor command. The Over is 4-1 in the Phillies L5 games and 3-0-1 in the Rockies Last 4. Expect plenty of runs in a back-and-forth affair.
