With David Montgomery now in Houston, Gibbs isn't sharing this backfield with anyone. He played 72.6% of Detroit's offensive snaps in Week 1 and accounted for 91.9% of the team's running back touches, and with no proven backup behind him, that workload isn't going anywhere. A shuffled offensive line — Detroit is down starting center Cade Mays, right tackle Blake Miller, and left guard Christian Mahogany — only reinforces this, since a patched-together line tends to mean more checkdowns and quick, safe throws to the backfield rather than fewer.
That usage is what makes the receiving prop attractive: it's driven by Detroit's game plan more than by how well any given play is defended. Buffalo's defense already gave up 8-of-10 passing for 111 yards specifically on the short, underneath routes backs like Gibbs work out of the backfield, and Gibbs caught exactly five passes in Week 1 in his first game as the clear feature back.
The touchdown angle follows the same logic. Montgomery wasn't just taking early-down carries away from Gibbs last season — he was taking real red-zone work too, handling 32% of Detroit's red-zone rushing share. That share now consolidates onto one back in a game projected for the highest total of the NFL season (54.5 points), which should mean plenty of scoring opportunities to go around even if individual rushing lanes are tougher to find.
