Neither team is sending out its real roster Saturday. Sean McVay has confirmed none of his starters will play, keeping Matthew Stafford and the rest of Los Angeles' proven veterans on the sideline. New Orleans is following the same script, holding starting quarterback Tyler Shough out for a second straight week and leaning toward Spencer Rattler under center instead. With both franchise quarterbacks watching from the sideline, this game is being decided largely by the same backup units that already played in Week 1.
That's what makes last week worth a second look. Rookie Ty Simpson lit it up in his preseason debut, going 21 of 25 for 190 yards and two touchdowns without an interception, a performance that ranks third among all 2026 rookie quarterbacks by PFF grade, and the Rams beat the Chiefs 20-12 behind it. Rattler's outing went the other way. He completed just 8 of 11 passes for 42 yards and lost a fumble as New Orleans fell to Jacksonville, 24-20. If Saturday's game is largely a rematch of the same personnel, one team's backups clearly outplayed the other's a week ago.
The market hasn't caught up to that gap. The line has actually moved toward New Orleans since it opened, with some books up to Saints -3 as of Saturday morning, and both Kalshi and Polymarket have the Saints around 52-53% favorites. That movement looks more tied to New Orleans' overall roster reputation than to what actually happened on the field last week. It's also worth noting Stetson Bennett, not Simpson, took the other series in that Week 1 game and struggled, so this case leans on McVay giving Simpson another look Saturday rather than a guarantee.
Bottom Line: The betting market is drifting toward New Orleans, but last week's tape says the opposite: Los Angeles' backups were sharper and more productive than New Orleans'. That gap is worth a look at Rams +1.5.
