Free Pick: NYY/LAA Under 7
Both starters are dealing right now. Cam Schlittler has been one of the best pitchers in baseball all season (12-6, 2.09 ERA, 0.97 WHIP), and he's only sharpened since June, striking out 12.7 batters per nine over that stretch. He last took the mound against Boston and worked five and two-thirds scoreless innings. Reid Detmers' overall line (4-8, 3.54 ERA) undersells where he is right now: over his last four starts he's allowed just two earned runs in 26 innings, a stretch that includes a win over this same Yankees lineup back in April.
The offenses back that up. Los Angeles has lost eight of its last nine games and sits at 53-86, and outside of a couple of hot bats, the lineup is cold: Mike Trout is hitting .174 over his last six games, Moisés Ballesteros has scuffled since June, and Vaughn Grissom hasn't drawn a walk in ten straight games. New York's offense has carried the team overall, but it isn't immune either: José Caballero hasn't walked in fifteen straight games, Heliot Ramos has cooled off since late July, and Trent Grisham hasn't had an extra-base hit in nine straight games.
Most books have this total a point or so lower, and it's fair to note this series hasn't been short on runs: Tuesday's game finished 7-3 and Monday's finished 10-1. But both of those games came before Schlittler's turn in the rotation, and several of Los Angeles' other games this stretch have settled in right around or under this number. With the two starters trending this well and multiple bats on both sides ice cold, a quieter final score looks more likely than a repeat of one of those outliers.
Bottom Line: Two starters in excellent recent form and real cold spots up and down both lineups point toward a lower-scoring finish. Lean Under 7.
