Chad Patrick had a decent debut on paper, allowing just 1 run across 4.1 innings, but the underlying numbers raise concern — 7 hard-hit balls against a White Sox lineup hitting just .192. He also ended spring in rough form, giving up 13 combined runs in his final two outings. His splits are worth noting too, with a 4.30 ERA on the road compared to 2.94 at home.

Kansas City turns to Luinder Avila with Michael Wacha sidelined, and this is a tough spot. It’ll be Avila’s first career MLB start, and his minor league track record doesn’t inspire confidence — a 4.55 ERA overall and 5+ ERA in AAA. He’s unlikely to go deep, which puts even more pressure on a struggling bullpen.

That Royals bullpen has been one of the worst in baseball so far, ranking 28th with a 9.00 ERA.

With shaky starting pitching and a vulnerable bullpen, this game sets up for plenty of scoring.
