Twins SP Joe Ryan is an ascending Stud. He had a 3.55 era across 27 starts in 2022 and he looks sharp in 2023. He finished spring training with a 2.16 era. 5 starts, 16.2 IP, 20 strikeouts. He went 6 IP giving up just 1 ER (solo HR) in his first start of the year but gave up 4 ER in 6 IP against Houston in his most recent. He had 1 bad inning and the Astros jumped him. He walked 1 and gave up 3 hits in the entire game. They just happened to all come in the top of the 3rd. Yordan Alverez hit a grand slam. Outside of that inning he retired every single batter he faced. He struck out 10 in the process. He’s pitched 12 innings on the year, allowing just 6 hits and 3 walks while tallying 16 K’s.
Yankees SP Johnny Brito has pitched admirably in his first 2 big league starts. Throwing 5 innings a piece while giving up just 1 ER. He’s been on the fortunate side of things though. He has an xERA (expected era) of 5.11. The slugging numbers against Brito are skewed. His Slugging % against is just .152. His xSLG is .455. His Barrells/PA % is up at 8.1%, which is a well below average mark. To put it into perspective the worst Yankees pitcher was at 6.4 in 2022. That just means guys are putting good wood on the baseball. There’s just not much to show for it. These numbers eventually even out and the verdict is out on the kid. There’s two games worth of film for the Twins hitters to prepare with. He’s not catching anybody off guard anymore. Carlos Correa returns for this game for the Twins too. He missed some time with back tightness. He’s been a Yankees killer, slashing .310/.377/.599/.976 in 37 games. That’s .144 points higher than his career OPS.
