D-Backs absolutely hammered the Rockies first two pitchers yesterday but that was it. They scored 16 runs on 16 hits against Kyle Freeland and first timer Anthony Molina across 2.2 IP. Arizona had just 2 hits the rest of the game. A barrage like that is from good offense but also plain terrible pitching.
The Rockies will start Free Agent signing Cal Quantrill. Cal posted a 2.25 ERA in 2020, 2.89 in 2021, and 3.38 in 2022. He struggled last year having to deal with injuries. He had 2 IL stints and made just 2 starts between them. When he finally got healthy he pitched well, closing out the year with a 2.75 ERA in his final 6 starts. He's also coming over from the American League Central. He's made just 1 start against ARI the past 3 years.
ARI starts Merrill Kelly. He's been very good for Arizona the past couple years. He's failed to pitch into the 5th inning in each of his last 3 opening starts of the season though. He was also roughed up for 6 Runs over 3.2 IP in his final spring rehearsal. The Rockies are also plenty familiar with Merrill Kelly if he's not sharp tonight. Colorado did swing the bat well last night but didn't get much to show for it. They recorded 12 Hard Hit Balls and only struck out 6 times.
