4 Picks.
6:40PM EST: Cubs ML +130 (3 Units).
CHC SP Javier Assad has a 3.24 ERA on the season. He doesn't provide Chicago with much length and generally only goes through the lineup twice. The Cubs bullpen behind him has been lights out of late. Over the last 30 days Jorge Lopez hasn't allowed a run in 10 Games, Tyson Miller has a 1.0 ERA (9 G), Drew Smyly 1.59 ERA (9 G), Hector Nerris 1.93 ERA, 4 for 4 SVO (9 G), and Peter Hodge 2.7 ERA (10 G). Every one of them but Jorge Lopez has had each of the last 2 days off. Lopez threw 4 pitches yesterday and had the day off the day prior. They're all available and rested as not a single Cubs reliever has thrown more than 34 pitches the last 5 days.
CLE SP Matthew Boyd is making his 2024 debut. He's pitched well in the minors but only 2 of his 6 rehab starts came at AAA. He's worked up to 63 pitches and won't go much further before passing it off to the bullpen. It's a pretty taxed bullpen over the last few days and they'll be without their stud Closer as he's thrown 3 straight days. The Cubs offense is hot, ranking 4th in OPS this Month and hitting .296 with a .916 OPS over the last week. They got into the bottom half of Cleveland's bullpen early yesterday and scored 5 runs on it.
7:10PM EST: A's ML +165 (3 Units).
OAK SP Joe Boyle is being called up from AAA to make this start. He struggled with Oakland earlier this season and was sent back down because of it. He's thrown it well down there, posting a 3.0 ERA in July and throwing 5.2 scoreless innings in his only August Start. In his last 3 AAA starts combined he's allowed just 2 ER on 4 hits while striking out 30. He's pitching the best he ever has and faces a Mets lineup that scored just 1 run over their last 3 games. Oakland's bullpen has thrown just 50 combined pitches over the last 5 days and is in great shape. They have the 5th best bullpen in baseball.
NYM SP Paul Blackburn played his entire 8-year career for Oakland before being traded to the Mets at this year’s Deadline. His first couple starts went well for the Mets, but he has a career 4.74 ERA. He had a 4.43 ERA last season and a 3.86 ERA in 11 starts this year. There's just a whole lot of familiarity here with Oakland. A lot of these guys have seen him pitch for years and should put some stress on him.
7:10PM EST: TEX/BOS Over 10 (2 Units).
Jose Urena and Kutter Crawford were the starting pitchers when these two met on August 2nd and that game went over 10 runs in the 6th inning. Urena's lasted just 4 innings in each of his last 2 starts allowing a combined 9 runs. Kutter Crawford has allowed 5 or more runs in 4 straight and pitched more than 5 innings just once (5.1 IP). Both bullpens aren't very good, and they're taxed. TEX used 6 relievers yesterday and they immediately blew it when called upon. Boston's had multiple bullpen days since Friday, and they used 5 relievers yesterday.
8:10PM EST: White Sox First 5 Innings ML +195 (4 Units).
NYY SP Nestor Cortes has allowed a combined 24 runs over his last 5 starts and failed to complete 5 innings in all but 1. The best he's done in 3 runs allowed, each of the others have been 4+. He has a 6.08 ERA on the road this season as well. As bad as this White Sox offense has been, the manager change brought some new life. In the 3 games since Grady Sizemore took over, they've scored 6, 1, and 12 runs. The 12 runs came against the Yankees last night. The Cubs stud SP Justin Steele and their lights out bullpen were the ones that held them to 1 run. The Manager change has gone over well and at the very least provided some new life for the league’s worst team.
CWS SP Jonathon Cannon has allowed just 4 runs combined over his last 3 starts and 1 run in each of his last 2. He has a 2.9 ERA at Home and held KC to just 1 run on 1 hit (solo HR) over 7 innings in his most recent Home Start on July 30th. There's only 1 player on the Yankees roster that's faced Cannon before and he's 0 for 2. He'll have that advantage going early in this game. Don't trust the White Sox bullpen to hold a lead if the White Sox have one after 5.
