Mackenzie Gore starts for Washington. He got hit with a big inning against Toronto his last time out and a defensive error certainly didn't help but he posted a 3.19 ERA through his first 6 starts of the season. He's been very sharp on the road, pitching to a 1.8 ERA. The Red Sox offense continued to struggle yesterday. Nats starter Jake Irvin tossed a 7-inning gem but Dave Martinez followed that up with their worst reliever and he promptly blew the game. He also gave O'Neil a free pass and brought Devers to the plate. Devers then hit a 2-run double that won them the game. The good news here is that the Nationals best arms are freshly rested, and they've pitched very well. Arms that really should have pitched yesterday.
Brayan Bello is making his first start since a right Lat strain put him on the IL. He made 1 rehab start on May 7th and surrendered 3 runs on 4 hits and 2 walks across 2.2 IP. He only threw 52 pitches, and they won't push him too far either. The Red Sox top 2 bullpen arms have pitched back-to-back days, and this includes closer Kenley Jansen. Washington has the bullpen edge tonight and those arms locked it down in Game 1 of this series.
1:40PM EST: PHI/MIA Under 7 (3 Units).
Zack Wheeler's allowed 1 run over his last 4 starts and gets one of the worst offenses in baseball today. The Phillies bullpens in great shape as nobody has thrown more than once over the last 3 days. Braxton Garrett makes his 2024 debut today. He had a 3.58 ERA in 2022 and a 3.66 ERA in 2023. He didn't allow a run in either of his last 2 rehab starts and is stretched out for 90+ pitches today. The Phillies really struggled against the left-handed Luzardo yesterday and they get another lefty today. That game busted open when Luzardo got pulled. Maldonado came in for relief and a walk and two well placed weakly hit ground balls resulted in 3 runs. Then the bottom half of a bad bullpen pitched the rest of the way and the Phillies piled on. The majority of those bad arms are simply unavailable today. The good ones are rested and in need of work.
4:07PM EST: KC/LAA Under 8.5 (3 Units).
KC starter Seth Lugo has a 1.74 ERA through 8 starts, allowing 2ER or less in 7 of them. He has a .43 ERA on the road, completing 7 innings in every road start. The Angels lineup has struggled without Trout, scoring no more than 1 run in half their May games. The Angels roster has a career .182 BA vs Lugo. LAA starter Patrick Sandoval got off to a shaky start but has a 1.5 ERA in 2 May starts, fresh off a 7-inning shutout. He's faced the Royals once in his career, shutting them out over 7 innings last season. The Royals have also struggled against Lefties. Their OPS is .032 points lower vs LHP compared to RHP.
