Despite struggles from both starting Pitchers this season, they're starting to round into form. COL SP Chris Flexen was quite good each of the past 2 seasons leading up to this one. He posted a 3.61 ERA in 2021 and a 3.73 in 2022. It's been a bumpy ride in 2023 but he's appeared to find his footing in Colorado.
He allowed 4ER over 5.2 IP vs Toronto at Coors Field his last time out. It was a day at Coors where the ball just jumped off the bat. The final score was 13-9 with 5 homeruns hit. All 4 of his ER came via the long ball in the 4th inning or later. He held Baltimore to just 4 hits and 2ER over 5IP in BAL the start before that and pitched 6 innings of 1 run ball at Coors against the White Sox prior to BAL. Pitching away from Coors field tonight is always a plus.
Zach Davies starts for Arizona and he's been sharp following an IL stint. He's made 2 starts since lower back inflammation sidelined him on July 19th and he's allowed 1 ER in each of those 2 starts. The 2 starts came at home against the Reds and Orioles. Not some weak offensive teams. He had a ton of success at Home with Arizona last year, pitching to a 3.16 ERA across 11 starts. Even while struggling he held COL to 3 ER over 5.2 IP at home earlier this season. Last year he didn't let the Rockies score a single run across 2 Home starts and 11.1 IP.
Offensively neither team is performing great. The Rockies rank dead last in OPS when on the road as is and currently rank 21st in the Month of September (5 Games). The D-Backs rank 25th through their 5 September games and have scored more than 4 Runs in just 1 of their last 8 games.
