The Reds bats have been quiet the past week +. They're coming off a strong series against the Angels but so did everyone else this Month. The LA Angels rank dead last with a 6.37 ERA in the Month of August. The Reds scored 4 runs on 7 hits in game 1 of the LAA series but 3 of those came unearned from a botched fielding attempt on a 66mph ground ball.
They put up 9 on LA's bullpen in Game 1 of yesterday's double header after Ohtani left with an injury after 1.1 IP. They would score 7 later in the day after putting up 4 against LAA SP Reid Detmers. Detmers has a 7.88 ERA over his last 8 starts. Angels bullpen ranks 26th in ERA on the season and they've just continued to drop. They didn't see much quality pitching against LAA and when they did, they didn't hit. Lucas Giolito and Ohtani are the only two quality starters for the Angels and they combined for 7.1 IP allowing 1 ER.
They're also fresh off a double header and playing 3 games in 2 days. 3 Games on the road in LA and now you're playing in Arizona. There's a fatigue factor. They're likely without a productive bat or two for rest purposes.
Arizona starts Merrill Kelly, one of the league's best pitchers. His 3.13 ERA ranks 4th in the NL and 7th in all of baseball. He's allowed more than 3 ER just three times all year. He also has a 2.48 ERA over his last 6 home starts, allowing 2ER or less in 4 of them. There's also just 14 combined previous at bats against Kelly between 4 Reds players. 9 of those at bats from back-ups.
ARI also had the day off yesterday. Their bullpen isn't very deep but since the addition of Closer Paul Sewald they have a strong top half. If Kelly provides his usual 6 innings the Diamondbacks have good enough arms available to throw up a few Zero's if need be.
