The Astros took Game 1 of this series 3-1 on the back of a great pitching performance from Framber Valdez. He allowed just 2 hits in 6.2 scoreless innings pitched on just 84 pitches. Ohtani pitched well for the Angels; 4.2 Innings pitched allowing just 1 run. A couple long balls by Bregman and Alvarez against the Angels bullpen ultimately decided the game.
Jake Odorizzi is on the mound for Houston tonight. He had a solid first year for the Astros in 2021, 23 starts, 104.2 IP and a 4.21 era. Nothing to brag home about but he gave Houston a chance to win whenever he took the mound. He hasn’t had much work this spring, one game with 2 innings pitched and then a game simulation prior to this start.
22-Year-old Reid Detmers takes the mound for the Angels. He’s only made 5 starts in his young big-league career, all of which came in 2021. He went 1-3 with a 7.4 era and 1.79 WHIP. In his final spring audition, he went 3.2 IP allowing 5 hits and 2 ER. He’s facing an Astros line-up that knows how to work a pitcher, his command will need to be better than it’s been in the past.
Don’t see either starting pitcher going late in this game. Odorizzi’s arm isn’t stretched out for it and still faces a top-heavy Angels line-up while Detmers has a history of working himself into trouble. Neither manager will push these guys in their first start of the year, and they’ll get into the bullpen early. Both the Angels and Astros have good top halves but the meat of their bullpen’s (which they’ll get into today) are nothing special. Two strong offenses will take advantage of that.
