The Rockies took Game 1 of this 2-game set in the 10th inning last night. Colorado racked up 14 hits, but Rangers starter Taylor Hearn consistently worked himself out of trouble and only let 1 of the 9 total baserunners cross the plate. Texas tallied up 9 hits but couldn’t drive them in either going just 1 for 8 with RISP. COL & TEX combined to go 4 of 24 with RISP and still put up 10 runs.
After 5 years with the Pirates Chad Kuhl will make his first career start with the Rockies. His time in Pittsburgh was riddled with injuries and an inability to provide the innings you want from a starter. He was eventually relegated to bullpen duties in 2021. In 2 Spring training starts and 5.1 IP Kuhl’s allowed 12 hits, 4 walks, and 8 ER.
Martin Perez returns to Texas where he spent the first 7 years of his big-league career before stints with MIN and BOS. Like Kuhl he also struggled as a starter in 2021 and got moved to the Bullpen because of it. He’s only made 30 relief appearances in his 10-year career, 14 of which came last season. He’s only made 1 spring training start. He went 3 IP, allowing 1 ER and 4 total baserunners.
Neither pitcher is going to provide much length in this game, they’re neither stretched out for it or efficient enough to do it. Each team is playing for the 5th straight day and the bottom half of two bad bullpens will need to secure a lot of outs in this one. With both offenses (Rockies 5th in OPS, Rangers 6th in OPS) hitting well to start the year, expect plenty of runs in this one.
