Return of the MAC! Tuesday and Wednesday night MACtion is officially underway, giving us football everyday for the next few weeks! The 5-3 Buffalo Bulls take on the 5-3 Ohio Bobcats at 7:30p.m. eastern time.
Buffalo Bulls (5-3)
Buffalo currently sits in 1st place of the MAC conference, 4-0 in conference play. They actually started their season 0-3 and are currently on a 5-game win streak. They’ve gotten it done on offense, averaging 30.9 points per game and 398.6 yards per game. Rutgers transfer QB Cole Snyder has had a solid first year in Buffalo, completing 60.4% of his passes for 1,907 yards and 12 touchdowns. He’s also rushed for 4 touchdowns. The strength of their offense lies with Senior WR’s Justin Marshall and Quian Williams. Marshall has 35 receptions for 497 yards and 5 touchdowns while Williams has 41 catches for 450 yards and 4 touchdowns. The running game features a committee between Ron Cook and Mike Washington.
Ohio Bobcats (5-3)
Ohio looks to secure 1st place of the MAC with a win over Buffalo. They’re 3-1 in conference play, losing to Kent State in OT at Kent State. Like Buffalo, they get it done on offense but primarily through the Air. They currently average 32 points per game (2nd in MAC) and 426.6 yards per game (2nd). They do feature the #1 passing attack in the conference, averaging 308.5 yard per game. Junior QB Kurtis Rourke is having a phenomenal season. He’s completed 68.5% of his passes for 2,408 yards and 16 touchdowns with just 3 interceptions. 2 of those interceptions came against an elite Iowa State defense that is simply too talented for a team like Ohio to compete with. He’s spread the wealth for the most part, but WR Sam Wiglusz (Transfer from Ohio State) is his clear #1. He has 49 receptions for 579 yards and 7 touchdowns.
The Pick
Ohio Bobcats +3. Buffalo’s defense isn’t good enough to stop this prolific Wildcat passing attack. Their defensive stats may look okay but 3 of their 5 wins came against the 9th, 10th, and 12th (Last) ranked offenses in the MAC, and another win came against a UMASS team averaging just 12.1 points per game. They’ve only faced a few competent offenses and they’ve had their way with Buffalo’s defense. Last week Toledo had 441 yards of offense but lost because they turned the ball over a whopping 6 times. Coastal Carolina put up 504 yards of offense, Maryland 446, and even Holy Cross beat them with 457 yards of offense. None of those teams average more passing yards per game than Ohio does at 308.5 YPG. The Home team is 7-1 L8 meetings between these two and Ohio is 4-1 ATS L5 vs Buffalo at home. Ohio’s 4-0 ATS L4 Overall, 4-0 ATS L4 conference games, and 20-8 ATS L28 vs teams with a winning record. Buffalo meanwhile is just 9-24 L33 road games vs a team with a winning home record. Standout Junior QB Kurtis Rourke lights it up at home tonight.
