Moneyline: Red Sox -125 / Tigers +105
Runline: Red Sox -1.5 (+140) / Tigers +1.5 (-155)
Total: Over/Under 9.5
Both the Red Sox and Tigers dropped their opening series to their AL division rivals 1-2. The Tigers pulled out a win on Opening Day and the Red Sox avoided being swept by the Yankees last night. Both teams are off to a poor start at the plate, the Red Sox are hitting just .186 and the Tigers .185.
Michael Wacha will take the mound for the Red Sox tonight. He’s been just a shell of his former dominant young self in St. Louis these past couple years. He was with the Mets in 2020, made 7 starts pitching to a 6.62 era. In 2021 he landed with the Rays, 23 starts in 29 appearances pitching to a 5.05 era. His final spring start didn’t go well either, 6 hits, 3walks and 6 ER in just 4 innings.
24-year-old Matt Manning gets the start for Detroit. A former first round pick in 2017 who’s coming off his first big league season in 2021. It wasn’t a great year, he made 18 starts and owned a 5.8 era. In 13 of those 18 starts he actually allowed less than 3 ER, his era was inflated by performances that saw him allow 9ER, 6ER, 8ER, and 6ER again. When he’s on he has the stuff to pitch well in this league and he’s looked good in spring. He went 4.1 IP and allowed just 1ER in his final dress rehearsal.
The Red Sox offense looks like the same team that struggled to hit on the road last year. In 2021 Boston had the #1 offense at home but just 14th on the road. Their BA dropped 40 points and their OPS by 106 when they weren’t at Fenway. Look for the Tigers offense to get going against a struggling Wacha in this one tonight.
